Why? Domestic violence and firearms are an intersection that abusers use to coerce and control victims, and the ultimate result can be fatal. NCADV is taking a stand to protect victims and survivors of domestic violence nationwide by hosting a briefing to educate Congressional members and staffs about this critical issue.
Who? Members of Congress, advocates, and members, allies, and partners of NCADV will be in attendance.
What? This October marks the 30th anniversary of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), and NCADV is honoring this historic anniversary with an awards presentation and screening of the documentary, Home Truth. This powerful documentary follows Jessica Lenahan, a domestic violence survivor, who sued her local police department for failing to enforce a protection order after her husband kidnapped and murdered their three daughters. After taking her case to the Supreme Court and losing, Jessica took her case to an international human rights tribunal, seeking to strengthen legal rights for domestic violence victims.
Where? The National Press Club, Washington DC
When? Wednesday, September 13th 6:30pm-9:30pm
Why? NCADV is honoring this historic anniversary and the contributions and achievements made by our organization and the rest of the field, including a special 23rd anniversary commemoration of the Violence Against Women Act being signed.
Who? Advocates, allies, activists, and our special lobbying day partner -- Ultraviolet.
What? NCADV’s annual day of lobbying includes a full day of activities. Attendees will spend their morning learning about effective lobbying techniques and examine some of the most critical issues facing survivors and victims of domestic violence today. This year, we continue to focus on the issues of gaps in the federal laws on firearms that threaten the safety of domestic violence victims and maintaining current levels of federal funding for programs and shelters. After lunch, attendees will participate in a series of scheduled meetings with staff members of their members of Congress to review how they can support victims and survivors with new bills and legislation. The day concludes with a small reception and group discussion of the day’s events with NCADV leadership and staff.
Where? Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, various Senate and House Representative member offices
When? Thursday, September 14th 8:30am-7:00pm
