Domestic Violence Awareness Event
Please join us on Thursday, Oct 17 from 11:30am-12:45pm in C-213, Olmsted Bldg (Auditorium, 2nd floor) for an interactive discussion and presentation designed to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so it is a special time of year for this talk. Maria A. Turkson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Teaching Psychology and licensed psychologist, will present a summary of domestic violence research and facilitate discussion through interaction and short videos. Special guest speakers from the community include Chief Deputy District Attorney, Jennifer Gettle, Esq, who won the Governor’s advocacy award for her work with domestic violence victims, and domestic violence victims’ advocates, David Zayas and Becca Zelner. The event is open to all students and the general public (parking is free during the event). Attendees are encouraged to wear something purple, such as a hat, scarf, shirt etc. to symbolize domestic violence awareness as well as the unity that is required to make social change. Wearing purple clothing is voluntary and is not intended to impose a barrier to attending. Park in the Olmsted lots - free parking.
By raising awareness on campus about the issues impacting women, Dr. Turkson is the 2018 recipient of the Kathryn Towns Women’s Award from Penn State Harrisburg and she teaches courses in gender psychology and domestic violence. In the Washington, DC area where she held a private practice, Dr. Turkson conducted therapy at a Women’s Center where she assisted women and their families negotiate the difficulties they may face as a result of gender socialization and victimization, including domestic violence.
Please email Dr. Turkson at firstname.lastname@example.org for inquiries or to RSVP.
